ABC's of Water:Land Subsidence - Should I Worry About Groundwater Pumping Affecting Land Levels?

Come and learn about land subsidence in the Mojave Desert. What causes it? How is it measured? Why does it matter?

Michelle Sneed, a hydrologist and land subsidence specialist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), had been using satellites to monitor land subsidence in the Mojave Desert for nearly 2 decades-with the goal of identifying small problems before they become large ones. The maps of subsidence over the considerably large MWA management area enabled researchers to detect small magnitude, localized areas of subsidence near five lakebeds.
